It's here!

Day 1 of 31 at Two Writing Teachers!
This morning I woke up all jittery with energy, like Christmas morning.  It's here, it's here!!!  My second slice-of-life challenge is here, and this year I'm sharing it with my students!

Last year was my first challenge, but I was already excited because I had been participating in the Tuesday slicing community for several months, so I knew what an amazing experience the month-long challenge would be.  I wrote about how magical Tuesdays are and how every day would be Tuesday for a month.  I also wrote a lot of specific goals about how I hoped to grow as a writer during the challenge.  Although I didn't really post about it, I was also a little nervous that I wouldn't be able to complete the whole challenge.

This year, my excitement is more profound and comes from a different place.  Having completed the challenge and seen my growth as a writer and commenter, I know exactly what's in store for me.  I know it will get tough in the middle, but I know that comments and the thrill of living like a writer will carry me through the tough days.  Thanks to all the amazing writers in this community, I now have a huge stockpile of writing ideas for those days when I can't think of anything to write about.  Best of all, I'm looking forward to a whole month of thinking like a writer again.

Furthermore, I'm so happy to share this amazing experience with my students.  The first-ever classroom challenge is an incredible opportunity for them to write for an authentic audience.  I hope they are inspired and encouraged by the writing and comments of others in the same way that I have been.  I hope the ones who already love writing will soar and the others will warm their hearts to it as they see its power.  Finally, I hope we will grow into a closer classroom community as we write together.

It's going to be a wonderful month!

  1. It is like Christmas but less costly. I think it's great that you are participating in the class challenge too. This will be an exhausting month as you keep up with each of your kids and adults too.
PS: There was one boy I couldn't comment on because the link didn't work. I hope if they see another person commenting they will try harder. :-)

    1. Thanks so much for taking the time to encourage them, Elsie! (And for letting me know about Adrian's link -- he accidentally linked to the round-up page instead of his own page! I fixed it now! Thank you!)

  2. Hurrah! I read a few student pieces today, but will check over your kids tomorrow when I have more time. Isn't it crazy how excited we all are for this challenge!

  4. Really marvelous that you are taking the time with students too, Jennifer. I'll try to stop in once in a while. It's been quite a year since last year, hasn't it? For one thing-no more big moves of the classroom. Here we go!

    1. It has been quite the year! I was just thinking how I would have been changing schools this weekend in my old job... That all seems so long ago! It's been so fun going through the journey with all of you!

  6. Has it only been a year you've been part of this community? It feels like much longer! Glad you're a part of it. :) (And now your students are too!)

    1. It's more like a year and a half, because I started doing the Tuesday slices first, in August 2011, so last March was my first Challenge. I've enjoyed every minut of it! I'm so glad my students are now experiencing the joy of this writing community. Thank you so much for your comments to them!
