Hello Spring!

Day 23 of 31 at Two Writing Teachers!
Despite the fact that a "Winter Storm Warning" has been issued for our area until 8pm on Monday night, spring is here.  (At least, Spring Break is here, and that's good enough for me!)

Today, the sun is making my eyes squint and blink with its unfamiliar brightness. (In Ohio, our winters are dark and dreary, with few peeks at the sun!)  Today, I walked with my jacket unzipped and my hands freed from their gloves, soaking in the fresh air.  Today, I didn't cringe against coldness when I opened the car door.  Today, no biting wind made my ears or nose achy and red.  Today, it was spring.

Spring is my favorite season, and I thought it would be fun to welcome it like Ruth welcomed fall last August.  So, hello spring!

  • Hello golden sunshine streaming through my windows.
  • Hello birds chattering and chirping in the mornings.
  • Hello evenings, slow hours stretching daylight into twilight.
  • Hello walks in the park and listening to the neighbor kids giggle outside.
  • Hello porch and patio and yard, soothing my stress and calming my soul.
  • Hello sniffing bunnies and wiggly duck families, fuzzy and joyful.
  • Hello bike rides and metro parks, deep breaths of sweet, fragrant air.
  • Hello cheerful flowers and budding branches, wide-eyed wonder as the world comes alive.
  • Hello birthday, you make me feel like a kid again!
  • Hello poetry, you always fill my heart in springtime.
Hello spring, you renew my spirit and enliven my heart.

  1. I hope to say Hello too, but we have snow coming too. I hope it goes away soon. You have such a positive outlook. :-)

    1. Don't worry Elsie, it will be here soon, and it will feel even sweeter because we've had to wait!

  2. The wind was still biting and the sky was mostly grey here just north of you today. (Michigan) I am an Ohio girl born and raised (I hear my grandmother telling me you raise corn not children, but I digress.) When I arrived back home from a school event in our state capital, the sun had broken through and I stood watching the birds at our feeder. Your poem resonates with me as I am aching for spring. I shall read it again and dream!

    1. I'm glad I helped your heart, and I'm glad you at least got to enjoy the birds! It's funny to think how different the weather can be just one state away!

  3. I love your greetings for Spring. How about goodbyes to winter?

Goodbye icy patches on the sidewalk that make me yelp and flap my arms...

Goodbye to icy cold sheets on my bed, forcing me to coax my dog to snuggle until I'm warm...

Goodbye layers upon layers of large clothing--which turns into large amounts of laundry...

    Goodbye gray clouds everyday...

    Goodbye heating bills...

Goodbye shoveling snow, tires spinning and searching for traction, foggy-ice-slime on the windshield, and black car that looks gray from salted roadways...

Goodbye cold and flu and bare trees, shivering...

Goodbye holiday seasons and pink noses...

See you in a few months.

  5. Hello poem sounds great! Maybe I need to write a "hello spring break" in a few days!
My favorite in line in your poem is: "Hello porch and patio and yard, soothing my stress and calming my soul."

  6. So is today your birthday? I can't remember what you said about when. If so, happy birthday, so glad spring is on your side today. We have had snow & lots of it, here it comes, but by Wednesday it's supposed to be in the 50/60 range again. Whoopee! Part winter/part spring on the break. I love your hellos, Jennifer. A favorite time for me, too, is "Hello evenings, slow hours stretching daylight into twilight." It's cold now, but the twilight makes everything look so pretty, even in snow!

    1. I just love evenings, Linda, and I feel like they are lost in the winter as afternoons turn straight to nights.

My birthday is in May, so it's one more reason to be excited for spring. I've always felt lucky to have my birthday in my favorite month, May!

  7. With the sun and warmer temps today, It's hard to imagine the snow that is coming tomorrow. At least these spring snows don't stay long, and I suspect the snow will coat trees into a wondrous beauty. Spring is coming.

  8. I read your post yesterday, but was too daunted to try to translate. Then today in the mail my daughter's Spanish teacher sent a "Good News" card--written in Spanish. I let her practice her new language skills to translate it for me!

  9. Thanks, Jennifer, for the nod to an old blog post. I'm glad you resurrected the idea for your spring list. I like how well-rounded your list is. It make me excited to see spring this year too. :)

  10. This is a fun idea. I may have to try it when Summer rolls around. Right now, I am chomping at the bit for Spring to finally arrive and can't think of anything except goodbyes that I want to say to Winter.
